When our facilitators said there would be tears on departure, I was skeptical. It turns out they knew what they were talking about. It was with wet cheeks that I said goodbye to the people and country I have grown to love so much over the past three weeks. While I assumed that I would get along with the other participants in the program, I certainly was not expecting to form such deep and meaningful friendships that will undoubtedly continue to grow well after our project is over. Each and every participant, our incredible facilitators, and the multitude of local Khmer people that we have encountered, have all left me inspired to continue to make positive changes in my life and the lives of those around me.
The experiences we shared will be forever cherished. From the first tuk-tuk drive along the rugged dirt road into the village, to the contagious bouts of laughter erupting from the village children, which would leave us all in stitches. From huddling under the only dry corner of the “classroom” when the rain poured down, to taking that step back and watching the last piece of thatch complete the roof.
The many times we were soaked with sweat and dirt, singing our hearts out; the chomping down crickets and ants; barbecuing fish in the pitch black of night on an old fishing boat; and finally, unwinding on the beautiful beaches of Koh Rong, all are memories that will stay in my mind for years to come.
Overall, participating in this project has been an unforgettable, life-changing opportunity which has most importantly taught me to live simply and make the most of every passing moment.
